like a skipping stone to glasgow
after a relatively uneventuful (but memorable) day and a half in paris i sadly farewelled my seasoned travelling companion and beautiful girlfriend back to sydney. the walk from the metro station back to the hotel alone was quite strange and the two coffee's on an empty stomach earlier in the day didn't help the nerves. didn't quite break into tears but was looking forward to getting my arse out to beauvais airporty (a tidy 1.5 hours out of paris central on a bus). must note that the strangest thing about travelling alone is hearing music from my ipod in both ears; i had grown quite accustomed to blocking all sound out of the left and listening intently to lucy's selections through the right - it's a brave new world of stereo now and quite a nice sounding one at that...
arrived late last night to the welcoming hug of scarlet mcglynn at the glasgow train station (from one half-hungarian to the next! wouldn't guess it with a surname like mcglynn though!). no dramas on ryanair this time although the "low-cost airline" was considerably more expensive due to my lastminute change to a latenight, as opposed to early morning, flight out of paris. scotland is, of all things, slightly warmer than paris and to my everybodies amazement the sun was shining in a bright blue sky thismorning when i woke up from a very restful sleep on a full stomach. a latenight pasta fest upon my arrival was super and i will forever be indebted to scarlet for that one meal... dry crackers and an orange just wasn't doing it for me on the flying bus.
so glasgow is absolutely spectacular in the sunlight, there are acres of green (and now magically autumnal) grounds around the university which i wandered through while scarlet went to her sole class. i watched the squirrels nibble on things in the grass by the riverside and then run instinctively up incredibly orange-leaved trees in deft escape from dogs running off their masters leads. spent the last of my camera's battery which finished all too soon as usual, and then met up with scarlet for some more walking through pretty nature. the botanical gardens in glasgow are quite lovely in the sunshine, which lances in on a north hemispherian angle at all time (can't quite imagine how hard it would be living in norway, scotland is dark enough by 5pm). and the greenhouse is packed with beautiful orchids, ferns, arids, succulents and other such plantlife from around the world in the variously heated 'environments'.
unfortunately another rushed post but this time due to the closuretime of the very important supermarket. food is heavily on the agenda, as it should be, and we have many plans to see plays and drink and be merry. not a bad outlook and just the ticket to counter impending lonliness at the loss of lucy.
