wicky wicky (wild wild paris)

welcome to the west
it is relaxing, and also unusual, to be in a country where people follow the road rules. there may be rumours that parisians are crazy drivers, but i feel like i'm at a safe-driving school when i walk the streets here. infact, most unnerving of all is that people don't necessarily slow down when you step out onto the road (when the little man is red) becasue the drivers are so used to the pedestrians following the signals. all that non-chalant bravado of my italian pedestrianism has backfired.

aside from being quite nice to return somewhere that exists only as a dreamy (but quite precise) memory, the people here are much more... how-you-say.. normal. at least in terms of fashion there is much less obsession here with the "latest and greatest" (regardless of how trashy and kitch) trend. this is not to say that i was waving my fashion police badge in italy, but the considerably lower percentage of fluro t-shirts and reflective/oversized glasses makes things much easy on the eye here. of all things, however, the realisation that i made a grave mistake in catania by not buying some antique carerra - some could say, "old man" - sunglasses from a little permanent roadside booth has hit home harder than ever. it's couture couture couture down boulevard haussman, so i'll have to wait until the markets before i even bother looking for a decent pair of sunnies.

lucy cooked a lavishly dense minestrone last night in the neat kitchen of birds small-but-perfectly-adequate appartment. the blow-up mattress managed to stay suitably inflated AND i have been able to plug the ipod into the television so its music without headphones for once. quite a luxury. only problem is that the landlord doesn't know that we're staying for 2 weeks, but it's not like i haven't done that before. at least this-time round i won't be commando-rolling through the snow at night and then scrambling through the window while a bald scary ex-cop spotlights the area with a torch... well at least i hope that doesn't happen because the appartment isn't on the first floor. i doubt there will be any problem; all that needs doing now is a good acting performance so bird can organise a second key for lucy and i otherwise the mobile phone bill will start to skyrocket

very much ready to see some sights, so tomorrow it may be time to visit some galleries. lucy doesn't start work here until next sunday so there is much time for general hanging. may even try and scam my way into the dinnigan show this weekend with her. will keep all informed
